First female firefighter in Roswell history

For the first time in its 135-year history, the Roswell Fire Department has a female firefighter.Firefighter Kayla Lewis graduated alongside 13 other recruits in January. She said she has worked with the fire department for years during her time with a private ambulance company.”Just watching them from I guess the sidelines on the ambulance, I always was very impressed with what they do,” Lewis said. “I was always very inspired by what they do. However, she did not feel she was physically fit enough.Lewis was able to find a fitness program that worked for her to get her closer to her goal of becoming a firefighter.”At that point in my life, I wasn’t exactly physically fit at that point,” Lewis said. “It was always like, ‘Oh, maybe someday I’ll get to do that.’ Once I got into physical fitness, I started doing CrossFit.”This led to her feeling comfortable and confident enough to attempt the open RFD combat challenge, where she passed. Lewis also spoke on what she would say to women hoping to go into firefighting and other physical labor job positions.”For women, we do have to have different expectations for ourselves as far as how you train to get there. We’re not gonna be naturally as strong as men are going to be,” Lewis said. “However, we can still get the same job done.
