A new art event brings community and city leaders together
For the Love of Community is a new art and fundraising event organized by Tammy Alvarez (Roswell Fine Arts League and MainStreet Arts) at Pioneer Bank, inside the community room, 3000 N. Main St., on Feb. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Community leaders of Roswell contributed original miniature paintings for the auction. Proceeds will benefit the charity with the most votes during the event. “If you’ve got a charity you are just in love with, invite as many people as you can. So they’ll vote for that charity. The more votes, the better the chance to win the proceeds from the silent auction,” Alvarez said.
Also, attendees can win original artwork from local artists, such as Peggy Krantz, Aria Finch, Robert Lindsey and Gregg Burch. There will also be door prizes.
Unique for Roswell, old and young will be able to speak with the attending community leaders during this event.
The idea for the event came to Alvarez when she was attending a Creative New Mexico event at the Roswell Convention Center last year, she said. She had miniature canvases with easels and paint at her booth. People could visit and do a painting at the same time.
“The mayor was there,” she said. Alvarez asked Mayor Timothy Jennings if he would do a painting and donate it. “He first said he can’t paint, but graciously, he painted a little beautiful rough painting for me. That’s what got me thinking to get several other community leaders and do a silent auction. And, as I began making calls, it really dawned on me how many I didn’t even know, and I’ve been here since ’98. Roswell is small enough we should know who our community leaders are. Not just elected officials but business owners, people who run charities, those that have been contributing all these years. So it morphed into the civic event.”
