Majority Leader of the Georgia State Senate, Steve Gooch (R–Dahlonega), participated in the inaugural meeting of the Georgia Senate’s Special Committee on Investigations. This committee, chaired by Sen. Bill Cowsert (R–Athens), is tasked with investigating recent allegations against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. During the meeting, Leader Gooch emphasized the significance of the committee’s upcoming work, stating, “I eagerly anticipate delving into these allegations alongside my colleagues.

These are weighty accusations, and Georgia taxpayers must understand how their funds are utilized. Moreover, these allegations are intertwined with one of our nation’s most pivotal court cases. I am dedicated to uncovering the truth and posing these necessary inquiries on behalf of Georgians.”

Operating independently of the current prosecutorial commission established to probe prosecutorial misconduct, the bipartisan committee will conduct its affairs separately from other ongoing investigations. It’s important to note that the Senate Special Committee on Investigations cannot prosecute or disbar any individual criminally. However, it is empowered to gather sworn testimony and may employ subpoena power if deemed essential. More information on the formation of this special committee can be found here.

Sen. Steve Gooch serves as Senate Majority Leader. He represents the 51st Senate District, which includes Dawson, Fannin, Union, Gilmer, Lumpkin, and Pickens counties and a portion of White County. He may be reached at 404.656.7872 or via email at [email protected]
