Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) – Roswell Park is taking part in a clinical trial of a vaccine aimed at eradicating breast cancer.
This study was initially done at the University of Washington.
“The vaccine was given to patients with Stage 3 and 4 advanced breast cancer,” says Dr. Shipra Gandhi of Roswell Park.
Dr. Gandhi adds there was development of a very strong immune response in response to the vaccine, and a large percentage of this population is still alive with a very long follow up of around 10 years. She says the results need to be validated in a randomized trial, which is what Roswell will take part in.
Dr. Gandhi says this vaccine is DNA-based.
“It’s different from the other vaccines, because the vaccine uses the DNA protein, and once it gets inside the system, it goes for the protein that’s actually synthesized from the DNA,” Dr. Gandhi explained. “From what we’ve seen from the prior study, it results in the generation of a very strong immune response and to durable immune response because it lasts over a long period of time.”
So far, Dr. Gandhi says the vaccine looks promising.
The number of participants and the timeline of this trial have yet to be determined.
