Wrestling: Roswell places 6th, Goddard 5th in regionals | Local Sports

Sophomore Nathaniel Lujan and junior Noah Lynn placed third in the 133 and 285-pound weight classes, respectively. For Lynn in the 285, he failed to overcome Alamogordo’s Charles Hinson in the semifinals. Still, he came back to beat Clovis’ Michael Weist in the consolation semis, and outlasted Los Lunas’ Josiah Baca via a 1-0 decision to take third place. Like Lynn, Lujan lost his semifinal match against Los Lunas’ Ernie Gonzales by a 10-1 decision but recovered against Carlsbad’s Hunter Harkness, falling to the Caveman wrestler in the first round. Lujan also won his third-place match against Adrian Gurule of Rio Grande, beating Raven by a 15-4 major decision.

Juniors Keegan Nichols, in the 172, and Matthew Avitia, in the 189, both placed fifth overall. Avitia lost to Los Lunas’ Logan Talley by fall in the semifinals, and to Las Cruces’ Bulldog Alessio Cisneros by a 7-4 decision. Avitia turned it around in the fifth-place match, defeating Centennial’s Elijah Ghalayini in the third period. Nichols lost to Gadsden’s Alius Soto in the semis and Los Lunas’ Jonathan Trujillo in the consolations. Nichols won against Atrisco Heritage Academy’s Zi Lopez due to a medical forfeit.
