Only 1 Georgia-filmed movie nominated in this year’s Academy Awards

by Fulton Watch News Feed

The 2023 film “The Color Purple,” adapted from the Broadway musical, is the only movie filmed in Georgia up for an Oscar this year. Starring Fantasia Barrino, Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks, it earned the second-largest Christmas Day box office opening of all time.

Augusta-born actress Danielle Brooks scored the only Oscar nomination for the film in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role as Sophia, a character she also played from 2015-2017 in the “The Color Purple” Broadway stage musical.

This year’s Oscars will air on Sunday, March 10 starting at 8PM EST on ABC.
