‘Better Together’ founder addresses Chaves County Republican Women | Local News

Last month, Sonntag brought her voice to another venue, with an audience more receptive to her message, when she spoke at the Jan. 17 meeting of the Chaves County Federated Republican Women.

In her address, Sonntag highlighted efforts to combat the agenda of “progressives” in New Mexico, and expressed optimism that the infrastructure she has helped put in place can allow conservatives to make inroads in the November election.

The message by Sonntag, that fuses the need for business-friendly policies and the right-leaning populism that is the political rocket fuel of the modern conservative movement, was well-received by the audience in staunchly Republican Chaves County.

However, as a whole, in the last two decades, New Mexico has gone from a perennial toss up state to being solidly Democratic. No Republican presidential candidate has carried the state’s five electoral votes since 2004. Former President Donald Trump lost New Mexico by 100,000 votes in 2020.

The picture has also been grim for Republicans further down the ballot. Democrats now hold all congressional and statewide offices in New Mexico, and boast strong majorities in both houses of the legislature, clearing the way for passing scores of liberal policies.

Nonetheless, Sonntag feels optimistic about the coming elections in November.

“This year is our time. It is our time to take back control of this state, and it’s going to take a concerted effort by each and every one of us,” she said.
