GEORGIA — A wind advisory was issued for several Georgia counties Wednesday and will set to expire midnight Thursday.
The advisory coincides with a severe thunderstorm warning for northeastern Rockdale, Oconee, Barrow, northwestern Morgan, southeastern Gwinnett, Clarke, Walton, southern Jackson, northwestern Oglethorpe and northeastern Newton counties until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The National Weather Service issued a storm warning earlier in the day for southeastern Paulding, northwestern DeKalb, central Cobb, Douglas, west central Gwinnett and Fulton counties. This warning expired at 3:30 p.m.
Weather officials said severe thunderstorms around 3 p.m. were traveling through an area extending from near Roswell to Smyrna to Winston, moving southeast at 35 mph.
Hail the size of a penny and 60 mph wind gusts were hazards with the storm. Weather officials forewarned residents could anticipate damage to roofs, siding and trees.
Forsyth, Jackson, Dawson, Banks and Hall counties were under a thunderstorm warning until 3:15 p.m. Wednesday. This alert has expired.
Meanwhile, the entirety of metro Atlanta and surrounding counties were placed under a wind advisory due to west winds traveling at 10-20 mph with gusts between 35 and 40 mph. Weather officials said isolated gusts at higher speeds are predicted for areas above 2,000 feet.
“Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result,” the weather service said in the advisory.
Weather officials said Georgia can expect additional rainfall in waves, with a low chance for thunderstorms, Friday through Tuesday.
“No severe weather is expected at this time,” the weather service said in a special statement.
