ROSWELL, Ga. — A caller nearly took a 52-year-old Roswell woman for $2,700 in fraudulent fines Jan. 21 when she was notified that she had missed a jury date.
The victim said she went to the Fulton County Superior Court Jan. 20 for jury duty.
During screening, jurors were told there may be a new jury duty scam, possibly tied to the recent cyber attack on the county’s computer system, she said.
The suspect, who called himself “Captain Roger Collar,” told the victim she had missed federal jury duty.
The victim said she was instructed to pay two fines, totaling more than $2,700, and bring the cash to the U.S. District Court in Lawrenceville.
When the victim questioned the caller, he said he was dispatching an officer to her residence.
The victim said the woman ended the call abruptly when she asked for contact information and told him her husband is an attorney.
The woman also said the suspect asked her to write down and read out loud a “file number” and the fine amounts.
After the call ended, she said she noticed the numbers she read were her credit card numbers in a different order and with extra characters.
Officers said the victim immediately replaced her credit cards over concern that the caller may use her recorded voice to commit further fraud.
