“We want to make it easier for detectives to know if there is a camera available,” Douglasville PD Deputy Chief J.R. Davidson said. “We would be able to pull up a map to see if there is a camera in the area. We would then ask the home owner to look and see if they see any activity in the area.”

Davidson said it could speed up an investigation or give more crucial information.

If a business registers to integrate its alarm system, police can pull up the camera for real-time activity if they get an alarm from the business.

“It gives us some extra intel,” Davidson said. “Some times with businesses, we have to wait hours and days before we get in touch with the owner or manager.”

When investigating a crime, officers will be able to see on an interactive map who in the area may have video footage.

Davidson said law enforcement has ‘zero’ access to a homeowner’s camera.

“This does not give us access to see what you are doing,” he said.
