Restoration of the American Chestnut: 2024 Planting | Douglasville Sentinel

by Fulton Watch News Feed

Trying to get back to “Skint Chestnut” requires dedication to the task. Since our initial tree planting in 2022 at Foxhall Resort, the Douglas County/ Douglasville Group for the Restoration of the American Chestnut has continued planting on an annual basis. In 2023, the Alexander High School FFA members planted American Chestnut trees on the school property.

This year, we were fortunate to have the cooperation of local landowner, Buford Hudson, in providing the location for our annual planting. The seven American Chestnut trees planted were 100% American Chestnut. What that means is that these trees are “likely” to be the victim of Chestnut blight at some time in the future. If any of these trees survive to bear nuts, the nuts will be used to cross-breed with different cultivars of the American Chestnut currently in production. The more 100% trees we can locate and grow out, the better the chances are of getting back to the true American Chestnut.
