SUWANEE, GA — A 47-year-old assault suspect is facing several charges after police say he held his wife at gunpoint in their home before leading officers on a police chase that resulted in multiple crashes.
Officers first responded around 1:30 p.m. Thursday to a Brookefall Landing home. Gwinnett County Police said a woman told them her husband attacked, threatened and held her at gunpoint in their home over two days after a verbal dispute escalated between them.
The husband, identified as Lance Bradley Nelson, had a rifle and a handgun, police said. The wife told officers she couldn’t safely leave the home.
When Nelson became distracted Thursday, the woman escaped to a neighbor’s home for help, police said.
Nelson fled in a grey Mercedes SUV, and when officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, police said he sped away. Air units then tracked Nelson, police said.
The incident took a turn around 5 p.m., when police said Nelson tried to enter a Gas South Arena parking deck in Duluth before a chain of events – recorded on video – ended with Nelson’s arrest.
After noticing the parking deck was closed, Nelson drove toward Sugarloaf Parkway and was met by officers in two patrol vehicles that tried to stop his SUV, police said.
“Following a collision with both patrol cars, the suspect’s vehicle lost a tire and began to spin. The suspect eventually turned right onto Sugarloaf Parkway and collided with a grey passenger car and a pickup truck,” police said in a news release.
The drivers of the car and truck were seemingly uninjured, police said.
Nelson was then accused of crawling out of his SUV and running from the scene. Officers chased him and arrested him in front of a nearby hotel, police said.
He was then taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries he sustained in the crashes and will be booked into the Gwinnett County Jail once discharged from the hospital, police said.
