One of the innovative aspects of this project is the collaboration with local businesses and other organizations. Students are paired with a community partner who has provided them with a “prompt” that leads the youths to the problem or idea that requires a solution.

Together, they navigate the process of creating a product or solution.

Hands-on learning, creativity and critical thinking are all emphasized by guiding students through the engineering design process, and allowing them to address these real-world challenges. From defining and researching problems to designing prototypes using cutting-edge equipment — such as 3D printers and laser cutters featured in the library’s new Makerspace soon to be open to the public — the program emphasizes hands-on learning, creativity and critical thinking, Turner explained.

This collaboration enriches the learning experience and allows the students to see the direct impact of STEAM education on local enterprises.

Each student participating in this program receives a set of advanced tools and materials, including Hatchbox PLA Filament for 3D printing, Makedo Discover Kits for safe cardboard construction, wood for laser cutting, and an Arduino Starter Kit for exploring electronics and coding.
