New Mexico State Police has issued a temporary closure of several roads in Chaves County due to windy conditions and brownouts. The most prominent closure at the moment is southbound traffic along U.S. Highway 285 at West Darby Road, just south of Roswell. The Roswell Relief Route has also been closed between mile markers 107 and 112.Chaves County Sgt. Jacob Sanchez says many people may try to use State Road 2 to travel southbound from Roswell to Artesia, but that road may also be closed later Sunday.”Just understand it’s not worth it, being on the road during brownouts, especially if you’re going to the southern part of Chaves County,” Sanchez said. “Even if you’re going south and trying to find a road south, it’s still going to be low visibility, especially on those backroads.”KOAT spoke to the director of communications for the city of Hobbs about the weather conditions and what people can do if they are caught in them. “There was a small grass fire earlier today that was 10 by 10 feet, but it was easily contained,” said Meghan Mooney. “If you do have to pull over because the winds are strong and you’re feeling it at your vehicle or it’s making you feel unsafe, be sure to pull over in an area that does not have tall, dry grass, get into an area that doesn’t have any grass like a dirt road or a lot.”
