Carrollton BookFest to feature workshops for writers | Times Georgian

If mystery is your genre, Sisters in Crime Atlanta members Sharon Marchisello and Liz Lazarus will offer “Thriller Essentials,” an introduction to the essential elements of writing a thriller novel. The workshop will focuse on how to create suspense, develop engaging characters and craft a compelling plot with twists.

Award winning author, Susan Beckham Zurenda will explore why it is imperative that writers create thresholds for our characters in “Crossing the Line: The Role of Thresholds in Successful Stories.” Threshold scenes allow for transformation, and “in between” spaces act as a trigger to catapult a character into a place he or she has never been — and from which there may no return. This workshop will catapult writers into a new space from which to envision the world of their work.

For the poets out there, Dr. Robert Covel, Dr. Cecilia Lee and Dr. Eleanor Hoomes — educators and poets — will lead a poetry workshop in three parts. They will explore “Haiku, Music and the Art of Zen Medication”; Ekphrastic poetry (a verbal response to a work of art); and the Poetry Chapbook, which shows how to bring the dream of a book of poetry to life.
