ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – While his timing might not be great, a metro Atlanta state senator is calling on Gov. Brian Kemp to call a special session to address what Brandon Beach calls Georgia’s status as “the number one judicial hellhole in the country.”
Beach, a Republican who represents Alpharetta’s 21st district, sent the letter to Kemp this past Tuesday, only hours before this year’s Georgia General Assembly is set to adjourn.
“[Insurance] Commissioner John King has testified that we are in an insurance crisis,” Beach wrote. “Insurance companies are leaving out state which results in less competition and that results in increased rates on hard working Georgians. I have heard from independent truck drivers, contractors and small business owners that say they cannot afford the exorbitant insurance increases any longer.
“Governor, I believe we need to act swiftly on tort reform so we can remain the number one state to do business and help small businesses and hard working Georgians continue to prosper,” Beach wrote.
The 2024 state legislative session began in early January, and its 40 working days were set to conclude Thursday with lawmakers’ annual scramble to pass a budget and push through other last-minute items.
