After speaking with the teachers, Sookhoo discovered they needed some shaded seating near the playground — the same playground she played on as a student. That area used to have two trees that provided shade, but one had to be removed after lightning struck it.

Sookhoo also said she remembered that the same area would get muddy frequently.

To remedy those issues, she said she decided to build a pergola with benches and make a gravel pathway to prevent mud and erosion.

“I was honored and excited that MacKenzie chose to give back to Newnan Crossing,” said Principal Page Tarleton. “I have only been here for four years, but several staff members remember or taught her. I love that she talked to former teachers and remembered how things were on the playground when she chose her project. She picked multiple problems to address and did so in such a fantastic way.”

To bring the project to fruition, Sookhoo had to be a project manager by fundraising, seeking donations for materials and finding volunteers to help with the work. She said it took approximately three months from start to finish.

Tarleton said she approved the project and its design and then worked with Sookhoo to coordinate when the work could be completed. Tarleton said she loved cheering on Sookhoo’s progress and showing how much she appreciated her.
