Speeders beware: New cameras in Glanton school zone active | News

Assistant Police Chief Cliff Schriefer said there is no reason anyone should be cited.

“We insisted that they only be active when the school lights are flashing,” Schriefer said. “We have a police officer there with blue lights flashing at that time. They have plenty of warning.”

Coweta County School System Public Information Officer Dean Jackson said the school system received a request from the Grantville City Council to install the cameras.

“That’s our involvement with it,” Jackson said.

The school system doesn’t own or operate the camera, he said.

RedSpeed Georgia LLC operates the cameras. In late 2019, the company presented to the city of Grantville about placing the cameras in the school zone.

City Manager Al Grieshaber said then-Grantville City Council members passed an ordinance allowing the company to place the cameras. The Board of Education gave permission in November 2019. Then, the Georgia Department of Transportation had to sign off on the installation, since the school is located on Georgia Highway 29.

The cameras read the tags of anyone going 10 mph over the speed limit and mail an administrative citation to the driver.

Grieshaber said the citations will be $79, $30 of which goes to RedSpeed while the remainder goes to the city.

If someone does not pay the citation, they will not be able to renew their car tags, Schriefer said.

Grieshaber isn’t sure why it took so long for the cameras to be installed. However he noted that COVID struck in early 2020 and the many levels of government agencies required to authorize the installation.
