Tennis: Colt boys snag win in district match against Artesia, Roswell falls to Hobbs | Local Sports

Seventh-grader Diego Pool won the match against the Bulldog’s third-ranked player in junior Alejandro Madrid in three sets. Pool dropped the first set 6-3, but recovered in the second set to win 7-5 and 6-2 in the third. NMMI sophomore Colin Zhang and senior Ronith Yanglasetty lost against Artesia’s fourth- and fifth-ranked players, sophomore Jackson Hillinger and freshman Paul Miller.

Junior Colt Luis Molina took down Artesia senior Ethan Bunt in three sets. Molina dropped his second set, 7-5, after winning the first set, 6-3, Molina won the third set, 6-2. The doubles team of Fabrizio Cano and Weston Zhang snatched the win against Bulldog duo Summers and Lopez with set scores of 6-4 and 6-2.

At the same courts, the Roswell High team took on the visiting Hobbs High School a few hours after, but could not keep up with the 182-win Eagles team. Both boys and girls varsity team lost their matches against Hobbs. Due to injuries and unavailability of some players, other players had to step in and compete. Roswell Varsity Tennis Head Coach Andrew Boggs said that despite the loss, he is very proud the athletes for overcoming adversity that day, especially for the first-year players.

“Even with a solid team, Hobbs is a phenomenal program,” Boggs said. “It would have been an uphill battle regardless. It’s like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro…
