3 arrested after mail stolen from Fayetteville Post Office outside dropbox

In Fayetteville, local authorities are investigating a number of improprieties involving mail distribution. While little information is currently available, three arrests have recently been made in the case.

William Morton, 30, of Atlanta was arrested July 28 and is charged with 23 counts of financial identity fraud, according to the Fayette County Jail log. Also listed on the jail log are Christopher Smith, 37, and John Turner, 30, both of Atlanta. Smith and Turner were both arrested July 30 at the same time and location, and each is charged with a felony count of theft by possession of stolen mail.

A spokesman for the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office could not say exactly how or even if these three arrests are connected, but he did say that the investigation is related to mail being stolen out of the large blue box mail drop that sits outside the Fayetteville post office.

The FCSO spokesman did not say if or when federal authorities would be involved, but he complimented the work of FCSO detectives and noted that because so many complaints have been received from county citizens on this matter in recent days, Sheriff Barry Babb felt like his office had to address the issue.

In other law enforcement activity, a routine traffic stop in north Fayette County resulted in the arrest of a local woman on charges related to a domestic incident six months earlier.

The Fayette County Jail log noted that Nelsonya Blunt, 47, of Fayetteville was arrested and charged with terroristic threats and acts, aggravated assault, cruelty to children and obstruction of an officer.

Deputies answered a call the morning of Jan. 30 at a residence on Stillbrook Way in Fayetteville. It was dispatched as a domestic disturbance call with weapons, according to a spokesman for the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.
