ATLANTA, GA — A woman from the Dominican Republic on her way to vacation in California for two weeks claims Delta Air Lines lost her 6-year-old dog, Maia, while she was recently detained at an Atlanta airport, CNN reported.
The outlet reported Paula Rodriguez had a layover on Aug. 18 at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport before heading to San Francisco, California. When Rodriguez learned she did not meet the requirements of her tourist visa, they detained her for a night and a Delta agent took her dog from her.
When Rodriguez went to clean Maia’s kennel and board the plane the next day, CNN reported Maia was not at the gate where she was supposed to be. At least an hour later, Rodriguez had to leave the U.S. to satisfy her visa – but without her dog.

Rodriguez told Atlanta News First she rescued Maia and has had her since she was a one month old puppy. A Delta representative reached out Monday to Rodriguez.
“He tells me, ‘Your dog, she broke out her kennel, and she has been missing since Saturday,’” Rodriguez told the outlet. “After that, Delta hasn’t called me once or emailed me about the whereabouts of my dog.”

In a statement, Hartsfield’s Senior Communications Dir. Andrew Gobeil confirmed the airport has not yet found Maia.
“ATL’s operations teams conduct runway and airfield inspections throughout the day. At this time, they have not encountered the dog, but will continue to remain vigilant should she appear. If she is seen, ATL’s staff will attempt to capture her and return her to the airline and her owner,” he said in the statement.
