GCSU wins research grant for residents to get certificates in solar power | News

The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Georgia College & State University is one of four recipients of a community research grant awarded by the Partnership for Inclusive Innovation.

The Partnership is an Atlanta-based organization that leads and coordinates statewide efforts in innovation, opportunity and shared economic success. Georgia College was selected to train and certify underserved Milledgeville residents in solar power and in how to start a business in the fast-growing green-energy sector.

“The grant is for $100,000 and allows us to launch a certificate program in the design and installation of solar power systems,” said Dr. Nicholas Creel, assistant professor of Business Law and Ethics and director of the university’s Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

“This is a true university collaboration,” he said, “with the College of Business & Technology, the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Education all working together to build this program.”

Winning ideas in the 2023 Community Research Grant Program also included incorporating smart transportation technology in Atlanta; improving water quality in Brunswick; and investigating indoor air quality of public rural buildings in Statesboro.

In Milledgeville, Georgia College will introduce a certificate program with a special focus on providing technical training in solar power to underserved local residents. Participants will also receive business education opportunities to equip them with skills needed to become “next-generation change agents,” Creel said.
