“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” set to hit local stage next weekend | Local News

The shows will take place at 4 Your Occasions Event Center on Veterans Memorial Highway on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21 at 3 and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $25.

“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” is an adaptation of the 1967 Stanley Kramer film starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katharine Hepburn. The story follows a progressive white couple, whose “proud liberal sensibilities are put to the test when their daughter brings home her Black fiance to meet them,” according to the theater company.

Terry Miller, the local architect and Douglasville City Councilman, wrote the first two plays produced by the theater company. Miller is serving as assistant producer this time, with producer Tawania Grangent, and her husband Herschel — who is acting in the play and serving as 2nd assistant director — among those working to put on the current production.

Miller said with “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner” the theater company “wanted something that people have actually heard of but may not have actually seen.”

“What’s great about the story is you have someone who is this liberal icon, Drayton, who professes to be a supporter of civil rights,” Miller said. “But then he himself has his own issues that he has to overcome. So no matter how open-minded you think you are, there’s always something to learn.”
