Early voting has been ‘slow’ in Baldwin Co. | Local News

Voters in Baldwin County are reminded there are only a few more days left for early voting to decide the fate of the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (T-SPLOST).

As of Tuesday morning, only 532 voters had cast ballots during the early voting period, which runs until 5 p.m. Friday, according to Baldwin County Chief Deputy Registrar Randy Morrow.

The regular election day is set for next Tuesday, Nov. 7. All voting precincts in the city and county will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. The election will be overseen, as many elections over previous years, by Baldwin County Probate Judge and Elections Superintendent Todd A. Blackwell.

Morrow said there are about 27,500 registered voters in the county. All of them are eligible to vote in this election.

Early voting has been light during the last 2½ weeks, which has also included two Saturdays, Morrow told The Union-Recorder during a Tuesday morning interview.

The ballot contains only one question. It pertains solely to whether voters support or don’t support a proposed 1% sales tax to pay for road improvements and new bridges in Milledgeville and Baldwin County over a five-year period from 2024 through 2029.

During that time, local government officials predict T-SPLOST would generate as much as $45 million. The largest portion of the T-SPLOST, 65% of the total money collected from the special road/bridges tax would go to county projects while a lesser share of it, 35%, would go towards city street projects.

Baldwin County Commissioner Henry R. Craig along with Baldwin County Manager Carlos Tobar recently were guest speakers at the Rotary Club of Milledgeville. Craig said he considers roads one of the worst problems in the county. He contends there are a lot of bad roads within the county.
