Georgia awarded $1.3M for species conservation

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFW) awarded Georgia over $1.3 million for imperiled species conservation as part of more than $40.6 million in grants awarded by the Department of the Interior.

While decisions on where the grant money will be used for habitat acquisitions are yet to be determined, the funds will go towards protecting endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers, gopher tortoises and wood storks in Georgia.

The grants aid 10 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands in supporting conservation and land acquisition for 65 endangered species across 7,200 acres of habitat through the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund.
