Schilling, Reitmire winning Union Gap City Council races in early results | Elections

An incumbent and a political newcomer were leading in early returns in the two contested races for Union Gap City Council on Tuesday.

Unofficial results from Tuesday night for Union Gap Position 6 showed incumbent Julie Schilling leading challenger Dave Matson, a former City Council member, with 60.23% of the vote to Matson’s 39.48%, or 209 votes for Schilling to 137 votes for Matson. There was one vote for a write-in candidate.

Schilling, 66, is a retired Yakima Herald-Republic advertising salesperson and also worked for Fosseen’s Home & Hearth in public relations. Matson, 66, is owner and operator of Deb’s Mobile Home Transfer in Union Gap since 1980. He was on the Union Gap City Council in Position 5 for three terms through 2019.

Unofficial results for Union Gap Position 5 showed Georgia Reitmire ahead of Jim Lemon, with 56.97% of the vote to 42.43%, or 192 votes for Reitmire to 143 votes for Lemon. There were two write-in votes.

Incumbent David Hansen did not seek reelection.

Lemon, 55, was a Union Gap City Council member from 2000 to 2008 and mayor from 2008 to 2013. He is unemployed. Reitmire, 63, works for Yakima Valley Libraries as a library manager. This is her first time running for elected office.
