UVa field hockey advances to final four

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Dani Mendez-Trendler, Madison Orsi, Minnie Pollock and Adele Iacobucci scored to give the fifth-ranked Virginia field hockey team a 4-0 win over fourth-seeded and fourth-ranked Maryland in an NCAA quarterfinal Sunday.

UVa (14-6) earned a berth in the final four for the first time since 2019. UVa will visit top-seeded and top-ranked North Carolina (16-3) on Friday.

W&L 2, SUNY Oneonta 1

Grant McCarty and Weyimi Agbeyegbe scored to give the host Generals (14-4-4) a win over SUNY Oneonta (14-4-3) in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament Sunday.

W&L will meet Tufts in the Sweet 16 next weekend at a site yet to be announced.

No. 5 Va. Tech 39, American 4

The host Hokies (1-1) won nine of the 10 bouts to beat the Eagles (2-2) on Sunday.

American’s Jack Maida beat fourth-ranked Eddie Ventresca 9-0 at 125 pounds.

Tech winners of note included fourth-ranked Sam Latona, who won 12-1; fourth-ranked Caleb Henson, who won 17-2; sixth-ranked Bryce Andonian, who pinned his foe in 1:36; third-ranked Mekhi Lewis, who won 20-3; and Christiansburg graduate Andy Smith, who won 21-3.

UVa teams get NCAA bids

The UVa men’s and women’s teams each received an at-large bid Saturday to the NCAA Division I national championships.

UVa will host the Division I men’s and women’s championships on Nov. 18.

Only the top two men’s and women’s teams in each of the NCAA regional meets earned automatic bids.

The NCAA Southeast Regional meet was held Friday in Spartanburg, S.C.

N.C. State won the women’s meet, with Furman second and UVa third. Virginia Tech was seventh.

UVa’s Margot Appleton finished third on the 6K course with a time of 19:48.9.
