Maryland football enters its 11th game of the season knowing that it is going bowling. The Terps earned their decisive sixth win of the season last Saturday, and they will search for a program-defining win this Saturday against undefeated Michigan.
But which bowl will the Terps be playing in? Obviously, their last two games will have plenty to do with their eventual postseason destination, but the pre-week 12 predictions project a wide array of potential games. Six different projections from five big publications penciled in five different landing spots.
Both 247Sports’ Brad Crawford CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm predict the Terps will be playing in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl against a Big 12 team in Phoenix on Dec. 26. Crawford thinks the Terps will play Texas Tech, which is 5-5 and yet to clinch bowl eligibility, and Palm foresees them playing rival West Virginia, which has the same record as Maryland at 6-4. Mountaineers head coach Neal Brown seemed like a lame duck this season, but he clinched a postseason berth well before season’s end. A rivalry meeting between the Terps and the Mountaineers – a series West Virginia leads, 28-23-2, would bring a lot of eyeballs.
ESPN’s Mark Schlabach also sees the Terps playing West Virginia, but he projects the matchup in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis on Dec. 29.
ESPN’s Kyle Bonaugra still projects a pretty premier postseason destination for the Terps in the ReliaQuest Bowl vs. Auburn on New Year’s Day 2024 in Tampa, Florida. The ReliaQuest Bowl, formerly known as the Outback Bowl, would give the Terps a national spotlight on the sport’s biggest day each year. Auburn is 6-4 through 10 games and 3-4 in the SEC with games against New Mexico State and Alabama remaining. Maryland is 1-2 all-time against the Tigers, winning in 1952 and losing in 1958 and 1983.
