A new 34-mile trail stretches across Lookout Mountain, connecting Georgia’s Cloudland Canyon State Park to St. Elmo.
The River to Clouds Route, which starts at the state park near Rising Fawn, Georgia, and tracks north to the base of Lookout Mountain, links together several public lands managed by different organizations and is a project that’s been in the works for about 25 to 30 years, according to John Bilderback, Thrive Regional Partnership’s director of natural resources.
“This is a passion project for a lot of people,” Bilderback said in a phone call.
Thrive is a nonprofit organization focused on responsible growth in 16 counties at the junction of Northeast Alabama, Northwest Georgia and Southeast Tennessee. He calls the organization a convening table where people can cooperate on projects like the new trail system.
