Snow hits Chaves County | Local News

“Once we got down into Roswell, we had reports of two to five inches,” Aand told the Roswell Daily Record on Monday. He added that some sections of Chaves County and Roswell north of West Country Club Road experienced as much as five inches of snow.

Aand said the snow surpassed the previous record of three inches from February 2020 in Chaves County. The amount of snow this time of year in and around Roswell is typically about one-tenth of an inch.

“It was abnormal for the month of February,” he explained. The snow began to fall locally at about 4 a.m.

On Sunday, Todd Wildermuth, the city of Roswell public information officer, said that the city had deployed two trucks early Sunday to salt roads. He added that they continued doing so until 1 p.m.

“They will be back out early tomorrow morning continuing the street salting work with a focus on any areas that started freezing overnight,” Wildermuth said Sunday in a text message conversation.

Aand said a storm system from British Columbia brought the snow, crossing Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and portions of Texas.

At times, visibility was low, with snowdrifts of as much as 22 inches reported. Those hazardous conditions prompted the New Mexico Department of Transportation to close U.S. 380 west of Roswell. The road was later reopened to traffic.

Roswell Community Disaster Relief Services, a local nonprofit, reported Sunday on its Facebook page that they had to pull out some 21 stranded vehicles.
