Deputy Chief Mike Carlson is set to become the new Dunwoody Police Chief, following the retirement of Chief Billy Grogan on June 1.
A key figure in the department since its inception, Carlson has been instrumental in developing foundational community programs such as the Citizen Police Academy, Neighborhood Watch, and Chaplain initiatives. His promotion comes as a natural progression, recognized by both colleagues and community members for his leadership qualities and dedication.
Carlson’s journey through the ranks—from his start as a sergeant in 2009 to his recent role as deputy chief—has been marked by significant achievements and a steadfast commitment to public safety and community engagement. His vision for the department includes continuing to strengthen community partnerships, driving innovation, and ensuring the highest standards of training and equipment for officers and staff.
Reflecting on his new role, Carlson commits to building upon the legacy of Chief Grogan, “I promise to provide effective and compassionate law enforcement services to all who live, work, and visit this great city. As the men and women of the Dunwoody Police Department continue to build upon Chief Billy Grogan’s outstanding legacy, we wish him a happy and well-deserved retirement,” Carlson said.
The transition to Chief Carlson’s leadership begins immediately, with his official tenure starting in April.
