CHAMBLEE, GA — A 22-year-old machete-wielding Atlanta man who was shot by police was accused of assaulting two police officers and two firefighters.
Chamblee Police were dispatched around 2:45 p.m. Thursday to a retail store near Chamblee-Tucker Road after being notified of a man who was in the store’s pharmacy area with a machete, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.
The responding officer saw the man walking along Chamblee-Tucker after arriving at the scene, the GBI said.

The officer following him, giving him commands to stop and reveal his hands; however, the GBI said the man refused to do so.
The man was then accused of walking into the middle of Chamblee-Tucker, beneath the elevated MARTA railway, before pulling out a machete and facing the officer with the blade in hand.

The GBI said the man then charged towards the officer, and the officer shot the man multiple times.
“Officers and firefighters provided medical aid to (the man), and he remained combative, assaulting two officers and two firefighters while they were providing aid,” the GBI said in a news release.
The GBI identified the man as Tyrese Markee Simon, who authorities say was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
DeKalb County Jail records show Simon was booked early Friday morning on suspicion of the following charges: theft by shoplifting, criminal trespass, aggravated assault upon a public safety, possession of a knife during assault, three counts of obstruction of law enforcement officers and two counts of obstruction of firefighters by use of threats or violence.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
