Tarenia Carthan resigns from commissioner’s seat | Douglasville Sentinel

Carthan is expected to announce Monday that she is running for the chairman’s seat.

Carthan was first elected to office in 2018 to serve the constituents of District 3. She was named Vice Chairman of the Board by her peers for the 2023-24 term.

Prior to her resignation, Carthan was serving her second consecutive term which began in 2023 and runs through 2026.

She briefly served as interim chair when Romona Jackson Jones was suspended by Gov. Brian Kemp after being indicted on two felony charges in a bid-rigging corruption case.

Current BOC Chairman Phil Miller expressed gratitude for Carthan’s contributions to the county.

“We are grateful for Vice Chair Carthan’s service to the Douglas County Board of Commissioners and to the citizens of Douglas County,” Miller said in a statement released by the county. “Her passion and advocacy for a wide range of issues has left an indelible impact on this community. We wish her well in her future endeavors.”

On Monday, Jones announced on a local radio station that she would again run for office as Board chair. Both Jones and Carthan are Democrats.

The Douglas County Republican Party announced that Caesar Gonzales will run for the chairman’s seat.

A special election to fill Carthan’s vacated seat will be held on May 21. In the interim, the BOC will operate with a quorum of three members, including Chairman Phil Miller, District 1 Commissioner Ricky Dobbs, Jr., and District 4 Commissioner Mark Alacarez.

Last November, District 2 Commissioner Kelly Robinson abruptly retired leaving only four commissioners to serve.
