Georgia lawmakers make big push for reproductive rights with two proposed bills

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Some Democratic leaders are making a big push to protect women’s rights to in vitro fertilization, also known as IVF.

This has become a hot-button issue in our country with the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling, which states that frozen embryos are “children” and are therefore entitled to the same legal rights as other unborn children under state law.

On Wednesday, the Democratic Caucus chair, state Sen. Elena Parent of Atlanta, held a news conference at the Georgia State Capitol to talk about two bills she’s proposing for the state.

Parent filed Senate Bill 564, ”The Right to Contraception Act,” and Senate Bill 565, “The Right to IVF Act.”

“The Right to Contraception Act” works to ensure Georgians have access to contraception, while “The Right to IVF Act” would ensure that access to in vitro fertility treatment is not compromised by the definition or status of a human embryo created outside a human uterus, a press release for the event said.

Georgia Life Alliance Director Claire Bartlett said they’re preparing to fight SB 565.

“They’re framing this as access to IVF, and that’s not what the bill says,” said Bartlett. “We believe that life begins at conception and it doesn’t matter the location of that life or how it came to be, it is still a human life, and we need to protect it.”

State representatives Marvin Lim, D–Norcross, and Teri Anulewicz, D–Smyrna, also joined Parent for the press conference.

“I stand with my colleagues here today as a proud sponsor of Georgia’s “Right to Contraception Act,” which enshrines this right in our state law,” said Lim. “I cannot stress enough how critical access to contraception is – for all people, including men, who must bear great responsibility in both family planning and reproductive health.”
