by Fulton Watch News Feed

ATLANTA, GA — The defense attorney who accused Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis of being improperly involved with her top prosecutor was subpoenaed to testify before a state Senate committee investigating Willis, per media reports.

Attorney Ashleigh Merchant, who is representing a co-defendant of former U.S. President Donald Trump in Georgia’s election subversion case, is set to appear before the committee Wednesday, CNN reported.

Merchant has been leading efforts to remove Willis’ office from the prosecution of Trump due to Willis’ suspected relationship with top lawyer Nathan Wade, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

Willis has faced other scrutiny since Trump’s indictment in Fulton County, of which includes accusations that her office has mishandled public funds. The Georgia Senate voted in January to launch a probe into Willis’ actions.

Eighteen allies were indicted along with Trump in August 2023.

Trump was charged on suspicion of violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, three counts of solicitation of violation of oath by public officer, conspiracy to commit impersonating a public officer, two counts of first-degree conspiracy to commit forgery, two counts of conspiracy to commit false statements and writings, conspiracy to commit filing false documents, filing false documents and false statements and writings. He was released from the Fulton County Jail on a prearranged $200,000 bond.

An official trial date for Trump has not yet been set.
