Annual fishing rodeo set for April 20 | Arts & Community

“The whole purpose is for the kids to fish,” said Stephanie Butcher, county extension coordinator for the University of Georgia.

Stallings will open the gates at 8 a.m. and asks for no early arrivals. Upon admission, children will be allowed to fish if accompanied by adult supervision.

All children from pre-K to fifth grade are welcome, said Butcher.

According to Butcher, children are allowed to keep what they catch and chicken liver, hot dogs and dough balls are some of the acceptable forms of bait the kids can use.

At noon, there will be an official weigh-in, and winners will be announced for the two categories: biggest fish and heaviest stringer.

Now being offered this year, someone will be on-site to clean the fish for anyone interested. It will only cost 50 cents per fish.

In the past, the fishing rodeo usually had around 250 attendees, according to Butcher.

“It’s a great day for the kids,” said Butcher. “It gives them a great opportunity to get outside and fish.”
