Arnco-Sargent Family Math Night a success | News

“The Math Night was an awesome opportunity for these smart kiddos to put their math skills to the test in our aisles and to gain experience on how math connects to the real world,” Cole Baty, store manager.

Each student was given a math activity sheet for their grade level. The questions were hands-on math activities that included problem solving, numerical reason, patterns, shapes, weight, measurement, time, money, graphing and budgeting. They also correlated with the Georgia Mathematics Standards.

Once they had the questions, the students and their families searched the aisles for the answers. Baty also did a question and answer session about how a grocery store works, their ordering system, and how employees at the store use math daily.

“As a principal, the success of this event was all about community,” said Nick Epstein, principal of Arnco-Sargent. “The ASE staff absolutely nailed it. I was extremely proud to see our school community embrace an out of the box idea and I’m proud of the local community partnerships that we’ve developed that allowed this idea to come to fruition.”

Once the students finished their activity sheets, each one received a free ice cream pass to use at school. There was also a raffle for them to participate in. Each was given a raffle ticket when they arrived.
