Coweta County History Center unveils its first exhibit | News

The exhibit will be open to the public on May 8.

The CCHC is an evolution of the now-defunct Coweta Visitors Bureau, which formerly occupied a space in Newnan’s historic courthouse.

According to a previous Newnan Times-Herald article, the CVB was absorbed into Explore Newnan Coweta Inc., a destination marketing organization that promotes tourism in the area. Part of the absorption included taking over the Visitors Center in the Historic Courthouse.

Carolyn Turner, president of CCHC, said she and other visitors center members and employees wanted to continue sharing Coweta County’s history.

“We’ve been talking about needing something like this for a long time, so we formed this board after the CVB dissolved,” she said.

Turner said that the exhibit will remain indefinite, though one of them will turn into a rotating display featuring the various communities in Coweta County.

Currently, the items on display are from collections of CCHC’s members.

She said the CCHC plans to go before town and city councils in the area and offer to showcase the history of those communities.

“We have in our mind that we’ll go to the Grantville City Council. We’ll come and advertise your town and display objects that tell the history of Moreland or Grantville,” Turner said.

Mike Barber, a CCHC board member, said displays are beneficial for both those who grew up in the area and those who have relocated to Coweta County.
