According to Computer Science Class Instructor Todd Crafton, the AP Computer Science Principles Exam requires students to, independently of teacher input, create a program that meets certain criteria, including a function that has all three elements of an algorithm (sequencing, selection and iteration), a data structure of some kind and a parameter.

“I’m very very blessed to have some of the top minds in the county as my students,” Crafton said.

The assignment was to create a program from scratch that meets all the requirements for the AP Computer Science Principles Exam, incorporating everything the students have learned about coding so far. The students created QR codes for the board and public audience members to scan so they could try the games for themselves.

Crafton first introduced ECHS Valedictorian Anja Govednik.

Govednik created a game that features the player maneuvering a bunny in outer space trying to collect carrots while being attacked by aliens. “Once you get five points, congrats – you win,” she said. “If you get a score of less than or equal to negative five points, you lose. You can restart the game and try again.”

By scanning the QR code, the board members attempted to play the game and discovered it was harder than they expected, much to the amusement of Govednik.
