In April 2023 Allen beat Cox in a runoff for sheriff with nearly 51% of the votes to serve the remainder of former Sheriff Victor Hill’s term, which expires Dec 31, 2024.

In March 2023, Hill was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison on civil rights violations.

Turner, the current chairman of the Clayton County Board of Commissioner, is a former Clayton County Police chief.

Four Democratic candidates qualified to run for County Commission chair — including two current commissioners.

District 1 Commissioner Alieka Anderson and District 3 Felicia Franklin Warner qualified for the post while other Democrats running include Terry L. Baskin and Geffry Tate.

Democrats running for the District 3 County Commission seat include Le’Tashe’ Allen, Jodie Chambers, Attania Jean-Funny, Timothy Vondell Jefferson and Daunta Long.

The winner will face Republican David Hamrick in the Nov. 5 general election.
