Old Dominion defeated James Madison in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament final for the second consecutive year, winning 2-1 Sunday in double overtime in Foley, Alabama, when freshman Sydney Somers laced a 20-yard shot into the net’s upper left corner in the 108th minute.
The second-seeded Monarchs (13-2-5) took their third straight conference tournament crown, having won in Conference USA in 2021, and will learn their NCAA pairing when the bracket is released at 4 p.m. Monday on NCAA.com.
It was the first time ODU ever has won two conference titles on the same day; the field hockey team won the Big East Tournament.
Fifth-seeded JMU (9-4-8), which is doubtful to gain an NCAA berth, went ahead 1-0 when Suwaibatu Mohammed scored on a rebound in the 52nd minute, but Ece Turkoglu pulled ODU even in the 62nd off passes from Ashlynn Kulha and Riley Mullen.
No. 1 CNU takes C2C crown on penalty kicks
Christopher Newport defeated UC Santa Cruz 4-2 in penalty kicks after 110 scoreless minutes in Fredericksburg, enabling the Captains (16-0-2) — the No. 1-ranked team in Division III — to win their third straight Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament crown and enter the NCAA Tournament unbeaten.
Hanna Heaton, Reanna Slater and Hannah Calliott made their kicks, and two Banana Slugs missed theirs against CNU goalkeeper Amy Sidaway, who made a career-high six saves. Callie Birk then clinched the trophy in the fourth round by netting her shot. The Captains will tune in to the NCAA.com pairings show at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Va. Wesleyan wins ODAC at home
Also tuning in will be Virginia Wesleyan (16-2-1), which won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament on its home field, shutting out Washington and Lee 1-0 for the Marlins’ second title in three years.
