Three state girls in top 10 of national rankings

by Fulton Watch News Feed

With Connecticut’s high school season beginning in a little over two weeks, three girls from the state are ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight class in the latest national girls high school rankings, as compiled by USA Wrestling, FloWrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum.

Calli Gilchrist of Norwalk, a junior at Brien McMahon, is ranked No. 4 at 120 pounds with Norwalk freshman Kayla Batres ranked No. 5 at 105 pounds, up one position from the first poll of the year in October. Sarah Henckel of Soutbury, a sophomore at Blair Academy in New Jersey, is ranked No. 6 at 155 pounds, up one spot from the preseason poll.

The rankings evaluate all girls in grades 8-12 and athletes from all 50 states. The preseason is complete with several major events having been held such as the Super 32 tournament, the USA Wrestling preseason nationals and other events.

This year, the weight classes for the rankings have been changed to the new USA Wrestling weight classes, which include the current National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) girls wrestling weight classes, plus an additional weight class, 95 pounds. There will now be 15 weight classes with rankings, instead of the previous 14 weight classes.

The next rankings will be in early January, after all of the major early season tournaments in December, including some tremendous holiday competitions where athletes from many states come together to challenge themselves.

Coaches, parents and athletes are encouraged to provide information about specific athletes and their achievements throughout the year for the committee to consider. If they have information on specific girls who should be considered for ranking or updates on their achievements, please send it by email to [email protected].
