The search for an Atlanta Police Department police dog ended Thursday morning when the dog was found by his handler about 500 yards from his home near Bogart.
The dog was safe and unharmed, according to Oconee County Sheriff James Hale.
The K-9, named Ben, ran from his handler Tuesday as the pair were preparing to leave for work.
“He was perfectly fine, probably a little dehydrated, but he was glad to be home from his little adventure, I guess,” Hale said.
Numerous officers participated in the search with the Georgia State Patrol sending up its helicopter on Wednesday.
“Being that it’s a bomb-sniffing dog, it was a pretty valuable dog,” Hale said. “It was just a freak thing for him to run loose like that, but he was probably chasing a deer or some other animal.”
