A Georgia bishop is in the running for the Episcopal Church’s top job.
In an announcement last week, the denomination listed Bishop of Atlanta Robert Wright among the four men nominated to become its next presiding bishop, effectively the chief pastor and administrative leader of a religious community that at last official count had 1.5 million active members and more than 6,000 parishes and missions.
The three other men nominated are the Northeast U.S. bishops, Daniel Gutiérrez and Sean Rowe, as well as Bishop Scott Barker of the Diocese of Nebraska.
The election to succeed the current presiding bishop, Michael Curry, who approaches the end of a 10-year term, is set to take place June 26 at the denomination’s General Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.
