Local law enforcement officials to discuss crime, safety at town hall – The Champion Newspaper | 404-373-7779

Two DeKalb County commissioners are organizing an upcoming town hall meeting with a panel of local experts to discuss concerns about increased crime, burglaries and acts of violence.

On Aug. 3 starting at 6 p.m., commissioners Lorraine Cochran-Johnson and Ted Terry will be joined by DeKalb Police Chief Mirtha Ramos, DeKalb Fire Chief Darnell Fullum and other public safety officials at the South DeKalb Senior Center in Decatur for the town hall.

Discussion topics will include best safety practices, the latest information about video system surveillance, neighborhood watch groups, and how to use technology to avoid becoming a victim of a crime. Gun locks and safes will also be distributed to DeKalb County residents in attendance, stated officials.

“From gas and service station video surveillance legislation to community patrols and the monitoring of major intersections, I want residents to know what we are doing to keep you safe,” said Cochran-Johnson.

“The safety of our citizens is and always will be our highest priority,” said Terry, who serves as the chair of the county’s Public Safety Committee. “I encourage all to attend this town hall, ask questions of their leadership, and learn about how our police department is committed to ensuring safety and protection for all. I look forward to joining our panel, and notably, aiding DeKalb County Police Department in the distribution of gun locks and safes, a key gun safety measure we passed funding for earlier this year. An estimated 10,000 new gun licenses were approved in 2022. With these gun safes and locks, at least 20 percent of new gun owners have the potential to implement proper safety procedures from the start. Combined with the town hall, these measures demonstrate our commitment to public safety in DeKalb.”

Educators, community members, and elected officials are encouraged to join the discussion, stated officials.
