CHAMBLEE, Ga. (WANF/Gray News/FOX Carolina) – A driver who smashed their SUV into the front gate at the FBI headquarters in Atlanta has been identified as a man from Upstate, South Carolina, according to federal officials.
The incident happened just after noon on April 1 off Flowers Road in Chamblee.
FBI officials told WANF that there’s a fence that surrounds the perimeter of the offices, along with a gate where employees swipe their badges. The suspect driver attempted to follow an employee in front of them, but the gate prevented them from entering, officials said.
The driver reportedly smashed into the gate, quickly exited a red/orange SUV and ran. However, he was caught by FBI agents nearby.
The driver was taken into custody by the DeKalb County Police Department.
The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) identified the driver as 48-year-old Erving Lee Bolling of Easley.
Officials said they could not provide any details about Bolling’s motive.
“His motives at this time are not known,” said FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Peter Ellis. “[Bolling] was taken to a local hospital where was evaluated.”

The bomb squad was on scene, and the vehicle was thoroughly searched. FBI officials said no weapons were found.
According to the DOJ, Bolling made his initial appearance in court on April 3 after being charged with depredation of federal property.
