Low voter turnout from residents in latest election | News

The Town of Turin had the highest percentage of voters cast ballots in the municipal election. Nearly 23 percent, or 111 of 483 eligible voters, cast ballots.

Part of the reason for the high turnout in Turin may have been that in addition to the town council election, there was a referendum for Sunday alcohol sales on the ballot. The referendum was approved 73 to 35.

Sharpsburg’s mayoral and town council elections drew just over 20 percent of the town’s 235 eligible voters to the polls. Forty-eight voters cast ballots in each of the four elections, of which only Council Post 4 had a race.

Moreland’s town council election drew the next highest percentage of voters in the election at nearly 20 percent. Fifty-two out of 264 eligible voters cast ballots for the candidates. Both incumbents won reelection.

The remaining elections all had turnouts in single-digit percentages.

Newnan District 1A and B City Council members who were unchallenged for reelection drew just more than 7 percent, or 759 of 10,611 voters, to the polls.

Newnan District 3A and B City Council member elections drew 9 percent, or 669 of 7,312 voters. The District 3A election had no incumbent among the four candidates. The District 3B incumbent was challenged by one other candidate.

The county-wide special purpose local option sales tax referendum and unchallenged incumbent tax commissioner election drew 7,940 voters to the polls.

There were 187 unresolved write-in votes in the tax commissioner election.
