Milton Beck sworn in as new CCSO chief deputy | News

During those 30 years, Beck served in nearly every role – from detention and court security to narcotics, media relations and internal affairs before ultimately being named chief deputy. 

After his 2019 retirement, Beck worked in the private sector as a security consultant, which ultimately led him to work with Herschel Walker during his run for senate.

At his swearing-in ceremony held at the Justice Center, Walker was among several hundred attendees who made the journey to Coweta to congratulate Beck on his new role.

Beck and Walker were introduced through Frank Ros, a former teammate on the 1980 championship team. The two developed a friendship before Walker asked him to handle his security detail for his Senate election campaign.

Beck agreed and the next two years would be a whirlwind. Beck said he was overwhelmed by “the Herchel Factor,” and no matter where he went, it was electric.

“And Herschel was always willing to stop and talk with every single person. If we stopped to use the restroom, there would be 15 people who wanted to take a photo with him,” Beck recalled. “At campaigns, there would be women crying and folks just wanting to touch him. It was like Elvis or something.”

As a candidate, Walker seemed like a perfect fit for the grind of an election campaign. According to Beck, he rarely slept, spoke with every single person who approached him and always kept a positive attitude, despite the nastiness of the campaign.

And at the end of a long day on the campaign trail, Beck just wanted to fall asleep. Walker? Not so much.
