A police sweep of the school found that students had misidentified a toy gun in the possession of another student.

Normal operations resumed around 1:05 p.m.

“At this time law enforcement has secured the school and it has been determined that a student had a keychain with what appeared to be a small revolver,” according to a press release from the Newnan Police Department. “Students noticed and reported the keychain as an actual firearm. All persons involved in the incident have been located and the investigation will be completed.”

It’s unclear if there will be any charges filed or disciplinary actions taken, although according to Public Information Officer Dean Jackson, it seems unlikely given the circumstances.

“There was no ill intent from the student who had a decorative toy keychain hanging from their backpack,” Jackson said. “The student who reported it had no ill intention either, but simply misidentified it.”

The immediate response to the situation from law enforcement was overwhelmingly positive, Jackson said. 

“As unnerving as it was, the good thing was we had a situation that, despite not knowing the circumstances, both the school and law enforcement responded very well and very quickly,” Jackson said.
