Woman who lied about child’s cancer pleads guilty | News

Authorities said that between May and December of 2021, Lewis accepted money from various individuals and businesses, claiming the donations would be used to pay for cancer treatment for her young daughter.

Ultimately, the daughter’s school discovered that she was not being seen by an oncologist and that she did not actually have cancer.

One of the victims sought and obtained a warrant for theft by deception from the Magistrate Court of Coweta County, which led to an investigation by the Coweta County Solicitor General’s Office.

The investigation helped identify several other victims. Authorities determined the total amount of money taken from the victims who came forward was $2,308. The largest donation from a single individual was $900.

Following her guilty plea, Lewis was sentenced in state court by Judge Harold Benefield, who ordered Lewis to serve 90 days in jail, 48 months of probation and 25 days of community service.

As part of the sentence, Lewis is ordered to pay full restitution to each victim who came forward. A substantial portion of the $2,308 restitution was paid in advance of the guilty plea.

She is also banned from returning to Coweta County and making contact with the victims named in the case.
